Minister Dith Tina: Cambodia Has Overcome Food Shortages to Achieve Self-Sufficiency

Phnom Penh:  On the afternoon of December 18, 2024, Mr. Dith Tina, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, chaired the closing ceremony summarizing the achievements in animal health and animal production for 2024, as well as outlining the implementation direction for 2025, held at the General Department of Animal Health and Animal Production.

During the ceremony, the Minister expressed his honor and satisfaction in presiding over this significant meeting, which aimed to provide recommendations and guidance for enhancing the effectiveness of future efforts. He called on the General Department to improve work efficiency with a strong sense of responsibility and to collaborate closely with relevant general departments, provincial authorities, and local agricultural departments to assist farmers and ensure economic viability at the grassroots level.

Minister Dith Tina stated, "Cambodia has passed the stage of food shortage and now has sufficient food." He acknowledged, however, that the next steps in achieving food security present new challenges. The General Department and its officials must devise strategies that prioritize economic benefits, balancing supply and demand, and developing production plans that do not merely increase animal production, as this could lead to lower prices and reduced profitability.

The Minister highlighted the critical importance of public health, urging the General Department to prioritize nationwide animal vaccination and to provide high-quality, efficient care services. He emphasized that the One Health initiative must continue to be implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Environment to ensure the health and hygiene of the population.

Regarding investments, Minister Dith Tina encouraged the General Department to engage with private sectors and investors to promote various meat products in the international market. He stressed the need to address challenges related to hygiene, phytosanitary standards, quality, and taste, while adhering to proper trade negotiation procedures to maximize value and enhance contributions to the national economy.

In terms of political engagement, the Minister recommended that the department enhance its active involvement in promoting the Ministry of Agriculture's efforts and the Royal Government's achievements. He also urged a proactive approach to countering misinformation and irregularities with clarity and precision.

Concluding the ceremony, Minister Dith Tina expressed his strong hope that the General Department of Animal Health and Animal Production would continue to improve its operations, foster unity, and serve the interests of all citizens. He wished the organization success and happiness within a peaceful environment.
